Graduate and undergraduate internships are designed to enhance the education of students majoring in nuclear science, nuclear engineering, technology or health physics related areas that support the mission of the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Programs. Lead national laboratories include: Argonne National Laboratory in Illinois, Idaho National Laboratory in Idaho Falls, Idaho; and Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.

The internships provide an extensive introduction to science and engineering careers through the guidance of mentors. Both graduate and undergraduate internships in the program are available at all three labs.

Application deadline is Feb. 15, 2008. Online applications are available as follows:

Note: If you are interested in an internship you must complete the application for the laboratory you are interested in. You may apply to more than one laboratory.

Eligibility — The program is open to students who have completed their sophomore year and are currently enrolled as a full-time student at the time of application. All awards are contingent upon security access approval by the host laboratory. Participants are not allowed to begin the internship until security access has been granted.

Qualifications — Applications will be reviewed on the basis of academic performance and class standing, career goals, recommendations and compatibility of educational interests and the abilities with the needs of the DOE laboratories.

Award — An internship award includes placement on a project with an undergraduate stipend of $400/week and a graduate stipend of $500/week. A housing allowance will also be provided with an award. Travel to and from the laboratories or home institution may be included in the award. Participants are encouraged to seek academic credit for their internship.

Selection —Internship awards are based on mentor's selection and project funding availability. Interns will be notified by the end of March 2008.

Duration — The internship term is 10-12 weeks for summer appointments. Renewals are competitive and require a yearly updated application.

Health Insurance — Each participant is required to have coverage under a health insurance plan. It is the responsibility of each participant to secure their own insurance coverage before arriving at the internship appointment site.

Application Procedure — Deadline is February 15, 2008. Applications must be submitted prior to the program deadline. You may apply to any or all of the laboratories for consideration. Online applications are available as listed above:
